Lets define Compelling: Evoking interest, attention, or admiration in a powerfully irresistible way.
So how do we turn a story we make up into these traits? My style is to take each of the items and separate them from each other like this.
Evoking Interest:
Attention:
Admiration in a powerfully Irresistible way:
Then I look back up at my prompt or writing concept which in this case is; Writing Prompt: Two people are introduced, but neither of them admits having met before.
Now I think of different ways that I could make this concept interesting. What makes an introduction of two people interesting? Well, it could be that there is some sort of scandal with them being together, like princess Diana and a secret lover. It could be two assassins that see each other on the job and get placed in the same undercover job. The possibilities are endless, so how do we decide?
Genre! The genre of writing is where we get our guidance for how we are going to spin our story. A comedy will look vastly different than a horror than a romance. Remember, we as writers set the parameters of the universes we create.
After Evoking interest, how will grab the readers attention? This is a topic that has multiple different approaches. For me, I like the Fly on the Wall method. I want you to read the writing as if you are there watching things happen right in front of you. Being immersed in the writing will lure you to keep flipping the page. My writing typically will follow the path of mini high’s and lows along the storyline. It makes you forget about the rules of storytelling and makes you continually ask questions.
Admiration in a powerfully irresistible way. This is a tough one to crack for some. This is where a good amount of research and rewrites come into play. Admiration is subjective, which in turn makes this feel very raw and vulnerable as a writer. Always understand that if you feel it truly is irresistible then allow others to judge and determine that for you. Think about beta readers, or family/friends that are willing to provide feedback to you.
With these notes I’d love to see your mini write ups attempting to make this writing prompt compelling. I’ll be posting mine next week, so use the comment box down below for yours!
